On the upper floor of the Fruchthalle Rastatt, students of the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design present their own artistic works, which were created in dialog with the municipal collection. With the help of photography, video, sound and textile media, new perspectives are opened up, empty spaces are made visible and existing structures are questioned. The focus is on questions of visibility, exclusion and dealing with the absent.
The starting point was a seminar based on artistic research and feminist approaches to the collection. Inspired by Kaja Silverman's idea of the “threshold of the visible world”, the students investigated what photographs show - and what they conceal. Their works reflect how meanings are created through viewing, archiving and passing on images.
The students' positions re-contextualize the collection, expand it critically and invite us to think about alternative forms of remembering, narrating and making visible. The seminar was supervised by Prof. Susanne Kriemann and Karolina Sobel and carried out in collaboration with Vera Gärtner.
